Goldman & Levy

I have just fielded a series of cold calls from a gentleman going by the name of Melvin Cohen who claimed to work for a firm of financial advisors known as Goldman & Levy. On the third call, Mr Cohen got down to the nitty gritty. He was in possession of an investment opportunity in land in Marion County, Florida, and all he wanted was £5k for a quarter acre plot. He got quite annoyed when I finally let him into the secret that the chances of me sending money to some random guy who'd called me on the telephone was pretty close to zero, especially since I could find no trace on the internet of any firm known as 'Goldman and Levy', or indeed one with that name that was authorised by the FSA. He did (very kindly) give me his phone number which did have a London area code (020), however what research I could be bothered to do, suggested to me that this number had been allocated to one of these virtual office companies, so that likely meant doodley-squat.

A scam of course, but has anyone else heard from Goldman & Levy, or know anything about them?

Second Google hit comes up with this:
The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) announced today that Jack Levy has joined the firm as Co-Chairman of its global merger business.
Presumably the scammer was hoping to gain your trust by inventing a new company name containing two entities you may have heard of.

Or there's Goldman Levy Jewelers in Scottsdale, US or Levy Goldman And Levy which offers legal services in LA. :)

Yes, that's the conclusion I reached. Both Goldman and Levy are pretty common Jewish surnames, and there are a number of firms out there that feature one or other of those names.
• Just saw this vacancy advertised in the "Sur in English" free newspaper (google it for the website and you can see the ad yourself) mainly distributed in the province of Malaga, Spain:

SALES

Brokers wanted for land investment company in Fuengirola & Estepona. Sales experience in land, wine, stocks needed. 800 Euros a month + commission. Interested parties email: info@goldmanandlevy.co.uk

Maybe you can work for them :rotfl:

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Alan

It always surprises me that anyone would buy anything from a cold call from a company they haven't heard of.

But, of course, it works.
• I've just fielded a phone call from an oriental sounding woman from a firm using this name. They said that they wanted to discuss my HSBC holdings. I have some so I let her talk further as it seemed possible someone acting on their behalf and appently someone's going to give me a call. I fully expect the above 'scam' to be attempted!

They gave me a number - 02030867959, the woman told me she was 'Michelle'. Can find no clear reference to the phone number of the company on the internet.

I've just had my third phone call from a 'David Stein' on the same phone number (02030867959) trying to sell me land in Marion county, Florida as well.

Apparently it will go up 15%-20% in the next few months (just as it would when sold a few months ago). £5000 for quarter of an acre!

Anyway, they've wasted some more time and money on me which has stopped them pestering someone else.

As others have said - are they expecting me to send money to organisations I haven't approached!

Guess what, I've just managed to keep him on the phone for 20 minutes while he tried to sell me land in Florida!
He got a bit narked when I asked him for the address of my ¼ acre which would ONLY cost me £4900.00.
I told him I didn't feel too comfortable at the thought of sending £4900 to someone I didn't know. He re-assured me by telling me that the money was not being sent to him but was to be telegraphed to one of America's largest firm of solicitors.
I asked him who that is.
He hung up :rotfl:.

What a !!!!!!!

Do you spammers think anyone will believe this !!!!! ?
The only thing you've done here is to bump up an old thread, thereby giving it prominence in warning people off.
Well done to both of you.
• So there is a newbie poster with the user name of Kylle and the CEO of GS happens to have a very similar name (Kyle Rene).

Possibly a coincidence, but then again?

Well done to the 2 newbies on bumping this thread so that any potential victims of their scam have more of a chance of finding it. :rotfl:
