Decent milk chocolate on a budget?

Can anyone recommend some decent milk chocolate that won't break the bank? I want to make some chocolate rice krispie cakes so will need a few bars.

I've tried Basics/Value/Smart Price and wasn't too keen. Also, since their price has gone up, they seem poor value for such a thin bar.

I don't want to buy Cadbury's even if it's on offer as I don't want to give that ghastly American Kraft woman any of my money after seeing her contempt for British jobs.

Thanks

OK, so Chocolate is highly subjective so don't flame if you don't agree...
...plus as you have a Cadbury's boycott, I have boycott all Nestle products for 20 years.

Imho, you cannot go wrong with the Lidl Fin Carre Milk Chocolate (Cocoa solids 30%, Milk solids 18%) which I swear tastes the sames as Galaxy chocolate. The price varies though I got a small quantity for 17p per 100g bar about 6 weeks ago during one of their Weekend Deals. I think the normal price is around 30p.

Do let us know how they turn out...
  • Have you tried Aldi's Choceur chocolate? They currently sell 200g for 99p

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I read about this in the New Internationalist about the same time and appears there's little change with regards to Nestle.

Incidentally, there are other products to look out for as well.

Nescafe, Nestea, Gold Blend, Fine Blend, Blend 37, Nesquik, Nescore, Nestle chocolate, Milky Bar. Gala. Soir de France, Ideal Milk. Milo, Blue Butterfly, Ashbourne mineral water.

Crosse & Blackwell products: soups, Branston pickle and sauces, Waistline.

Findus products: frozen foods and Sweetheart desserts.

Other products: Maggi soups, Swiss Knight cheeses, Sarsons vinegars, Chefs products, L’Oreal cosmetics. And more.

As frogman say, Lidl has recently had two half-price promotions on chocolate.
17p per bar for milk before Xmas and last week they had hazelnut chocolate for 22p (both 100g bars).
No limit either, take as many as you can carry.
Worth watching out for, an absolute steal. In my opinion, much nicer than supermarkets basics.

aldi choclate is great - for general cooking I use the big 200g bars, for fancier stuff I use the 125g ones wrapped in black - cna't rememeber the name though its similar quality of lindt/ green and blacks, They also do a fair trade onf ro 99p a bar I think

I think that the Aldi cheapest choc, it is about 30p for 100g tastes like galaxy as does their bags of chocolate buttons which are 35p I think they are 120g bags.

  • Thank you all for the recommendations. I've been to Aldi today as there's one next to my place of work. I've bought 3 of the 30p bars to make my cakes so will see how I get on. May have to chomp a chunk or two while cooking for research purposes!

Will try and get to a nearby Lidl in the coming weeks as I've yet to go in one.
  • Def go to Lidl for the Fin Carre chocolate for under 40p a packet. It's delish!
