You might look into pallet couriers/shippers. If you can box your possessions and stack them on a shipping pallet (over a cubic meter) it would cost less than £50 per pallet door to door. At least that is what I paid a few years ago.0

There long distance haulers that advertise themselves when they have half loads. We transported 2 kitchens a bathroom and 3 extremely large sofas to france doing this and it was only £800 obviously a lot more than youll be moving and much further distance. I cant remember the site im afraid but have a look on google. You say what you have and where you want it to go, then drivers bid on how much theyll do it for.0

Diesel alone will cost a van driver 15-20p a mile, so £160 for starters. Plus he'd probably do it over two days and pass on the cost of a Travelodge for the night...
He'll do it in a single day.0 -
If it'll fit in an estate car then it'll fit into 5 or 10 boxes each of which will cost less than a tenner to send with a courier so a total cost of £50-100.
There is no way any other method involving buying a car or hiring a van (with or without driver) is going to even get close to that figure, even if the van/car was free just the fuel to do 400 miles is going to be £70-800 -
possibly throw the details up on shipley.con and see what prices people offer you0

I missed earlier that the OP said 400 miles. Most "men with a van" will want over £450, so much cheaper to hire van yourself.I would agree with wealdroam that 'man with a van' is the way to goHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Great responses everyone, did not expect to get this much help and I really appreciate all of your time in responding.
The above courier option definitely sounds appealing and likely to be the cheapest sounding reliable solution.
Is there a particular courier you would recommend at all for shipping this kind of volume at a good price?
Much appreciated,

we have an account with APC, I think they are trade only so ring your local branch and see if they will do a one off deal for you, otherwise try http://www.interparcel.com/quote/
If you decide to go the pallet route then remember a pallet is 1000 x 1200, load it up to 800 high and it's a quarter pallet, load it 1400 high and it's half and full is up to 2200. Costs will start at £50 ish via Palletline0 -
Once you have sorted out transport for your stuff you may be able to get yourself home cheap by using O2 moments, there was an offer on there for coach journeys for £1. Might help/might not;)Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
