I used to use System Restore to get the computer to a point before it all went belly up but there are limitations with this. If you cannot get the computer to even open up windows then you need another solution. What I tried was a free version of Acronis and I've never looked back. I got it one day on 'giveawayoftheday.com' and should the computer ever refuse to boot up into windows all I have to do is load the CD containing Acronis and the program over-rides windows and boots up into an Acronis screen wherefrom I can do a system restore.
I'm not saying buy this as I couldn't have afforded to myself at the time but being able to get it for free and experience its usefullness helped me no end.
There are other totally free versions of restore software which can be downloaded from the net. EASEUS Todo Backup Free Edition is very well regarded and costs nothing at all.
I've come to learn that it pays to have one or the other of this kind of software because one things for sure; all computers are going to go belly up at some point - so why wait for it to happen? Hope this helps someone.
