HMRC Form R27 - potential repayment to the estate

I'm back again with bit of an update and a question.
I've now got all the information needed regarding income to fill in the SA form for my late husband. Just need to sort out interest on savings.
I have received a form SA1002011 "Tax Return 2011" which has been crossed out and 2012 substituted, and the dates crossed out from 6 April 2010 to 5 April 2011 to now read 6 April 2011 to the date of his death. Very professional! I can't believe they don't have any up to date forms  .
This is the normal process when completing a return to the date of death when the return is being completed within the same financial year that the death ocurred. The new forms will not be available until 6th April.
As there has been no change to the form from 2010/11 to 2011/12 it won't make any difference at all.
I have to assume this is for my husband. It's addressed to me as Mrs W and there is no reference to him at all but the Tax Reference number is definitely his.
There is no return address and no telephone number. The back of the envelope it came in has a return address in Cumbernauld, Glasgow, but I returned the original R27 to Liverpool when I requested a SA firm.
Does anyone have any idea where I should return this form?

I am assuming I can't do it online (previous SAs were done online), and wonder whether it would be a good idea to do it online anyway.
If you wish to do the return online you will need to wait until after the 6th April and first of all ensure that your name/address etc is updated on the record as the personal representetive. Once you have confirmed this is the case you will be able to register via the HMRC website to complete the return online.
I can't say I'm impressed with HMRC at the moment, they've managed to right royally c0ck up with my tax coding, sending me letters with two different codes for my new coding and sending a different code altogether to my small private pension provider, plus a letter dated 9 February was received two weeks later than a letter dated 29 February! I can't be bothered any more with mine, I'll fill in a SA online at the appropriate time and let them sort it out.
Have you filled in the P161(W) yet? If not this will be why your codes are incorrect. If you have then the best time to call is between 7.45am and 8am.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Not impressive is it. I trust there's at least a reference (UTR) on the Return.
Send it back to the address at the bottom of this link ;-

Yes Mike, there is a UTR on the form and I have checked, it is my OH's reference.
Thanks for the link. That does say if you've received no recent correspondence from them to use the Cardiff address but as I originally had dealings with Liverpool about the R27 I wondered if that was the one I needed to use. I don't suppose it matters much, if I send it to Cardiff I'm sure it will end up where it's supposed to be (sounds like I'm beginning to have a bit of faith in them :rotfl: ).ukmaggie45 wrote: »HI there TM, Sorry I can't be helpful but just wanted to send my best wishes to you and hopes that things are generally going better than this stuff you posted about.
Seems odd the way they have sent you forms altered by hand. Suggest consider writing to them (send Signed-For) to ask about that? Good luck with it all, I find all this stuff scary, but have a friendly Accountant (he did all my parents' stuff so makes it a bit easier as he knows what was their stuff) so he deals with my tax stuff now. Costs though! But worth it to me as my brain is f****d when it comes to tax law!
Probate stuff different I think - are you through that yet or is this tied in to that? Just a thought.
Hugs and best wishes and, as ever, "Positive Vibes" from Liverpool
Hi Maggie. Well apart from massive problems with Virgin Media over my internet (account was in OH's name and he had the effrontery to die don't you know!). Long story going on since November but eventually sorted this week, I now have a new provider at a much lower rate and a big apology from Virgin after writing to the CEO, and a refund on it's way for the money they shouldn't have taken after altering the contract half way through. And apparently the agent who insinuated I was a liar and so obviously didn't want to be at work that day will hopefully get a dressing down.
I was intending to write a letter when sending the form back, suggesting that a return address might have been useful (oh dear, sarky head on today :rotfl: ).
Probate was relatively straightforward, I put the forms away for a few weeks while the scrambled egg in my head turned back into a brain, and it all got sorted early January so it's not tied in with this.
Hugs right back to you sweetheart, thanks for caring.Hope this helps.
Thanks for that. OH did his self assessment for year 2010-2011 online in June 2011 so tax had already been paid and a further small amount was requested in January this year which I paid promptly. So that financial year was completed. I was worried that someone might get it mixed up when I returned this form as only the top has been altered, not the bit further down which says "This notice requires you ........... for the tax year 2010 to 2011" but I will send a letter making it clear which tax year it is for.
I wont bother doing it online, I just want to get it over and done with so will send it in the post.
Yes, I have filled in the P161(W) with all information about my new income which is why I'm at a loss to understand how they've managed to get it so wrong.
Pam17 I quoted you but it's been missed off. He wasn't on benefit for that long, he became ill in 2008. That's all sorted now, I got the information I needed from the DWP when I eventually managed to get a number for the right department.
Thanks everyone for your replies.0 -

I did consider that .... but I still think Cardiff is right for the paper Return. Albeit the internal mechanics of HMRC is a mystery to those on the outside ....... and probably a lot on the inside?Well apart from massive problems with Virgin Media
They were my nightmare when my Mother died. Absolutely useless on every aspect. Couldn't tell me whether payment was in advance / arrears. Couldn't comprehend why the DD couldn't be paid (when nothing was due!) from a frozen Bank account. And couldn't give me a day - let alone a time - to pick up the set top box they insisted had to be returned. It was only when I got really shirty with them that they lamely volunteered I could take it the 100 miles to home and get it picked up from there (but no day / time!). Not sure how any of the Virgin companies make money. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
