Cannot format USB drive

Seems no matter what I try I cannot seem to format my 8GB usb drive.
When I plug in the drive it says "Windows needs to format the disk to use it." I click yes. When I try it this way it will "run" and then say "Windows was unable to complete the format."
Only other way I know would be to go through Administrative>Manage Disks option but this too doesnt work.
I dont think it could be write protected either..
Any ideas?
Thanks as usual
