Quick question/opinions needed.

I bought two bridesmaid dresses last year in the sale, I love them and they are what I want for my bridesmaids. This year seen my dress and love it. The only trouble is that it's satin. When I have been to bridal shops they have said I should have the same material for my bridesmaids as my dress. Should they be matching or would it look ok for them to be different. I have been to peoples weddings where the bride has wore taffetta and the bridesmaids in satin and that looked ok, not sure on the other way round though.

Thanks

I don't see any reason why the fabric type has to be the same. If you love the bridesmaid dresses, and love your dress, then really don't worry about it. I doubt my MoH's dress fabric will be the same as mine.

  • I don't think the material needs to match.

My wedding dress was silk and my bridesmaid dresses were chiffon and they looked stunning next to one another.

No one ever said the materials should match. Too much satin could look 'too shiny' all together.

  • My dress is satin, my Matron's is organza with a net trim and my bridesmaids are satin bodice with a net skirt and they look fine together. I never once worried about material types.

I've been to weddings where the bride was in lace and the BM in satin, the bride was in satin and the BM were in organza plus more.
  • I've never heard this. When it comes to shopping for bridesmaids dresses and my dress I will be focusing on finding something that isn't too expensive but looks amazing on the person that's wearing them. I don't think you have anything to worry about. x

Thanks! I do think if I have all satin it would look too much and very shiny. I wasnt aware they neded to match but some bridal shops I have been to were a little 'snobby' and told me 'OO you must never have satin and taffetta together' Ah well. As you say its our day!

Thanks again, I feel much better now :D

I suspect they were trying to get you to buy new bm dresses.

i've never heard of matching the fabrics...I would go with what you want...I had a silk dress and my bridesmaids were in cotton dresses...and everything was just as I wanted it to be....

If you really are still concerned then take photos in natural light of the dresses together to see if that shows up any problems...I think its true what you said...a bit of wedding snobbery perhaps.

I think the first rule for wedding planning is to ignore so-called rules...it's YOUR day, YOUR budget, do what the heck YOU want. My dress was dupion silk, my bridesmaid was in silk chiffon...mine was long with a portrait neckline, hers was short and strapless. It never occurred to me to get matching fabrics...I let her choose a dress she liked and I had mine that I adored. No of course it doesn't matter and FWIW I'd be cynical enough to have the same thought as sugarwalsh

Cobblers - the bridal shops are trying to get you to spend money. Stick to what YOU want, it's YOUR day, YOUR choice!

BTW, I was in ivory silk taffeta, my bridesmaid wore pewter grey satin with ivory embroidery - not an issue as far as me or anyone else was concerned.

i have never hard anything so stupid in my life, your wedding photos will bemore important than the day itself as they will last forever!
to be certain cant you take a bridesmaid dress with you and hold it next to your chosen dress to be 100% sure nothing clashes, a small detail like that could show really bad on photos!
