BEKO/Comet Fridge Freezer problem

On 17th June we purchased a BEKO CDA646W fridge-freezer from Comet. The Beko website advised that the device was suitable for outhouses/garages and could be used at temperatures reaching as low as -18c. It was therefore suitable for use in our unheated utility room. We purchased the unit and registered the warranty.

The freezer part of the unit is now failing. We contacted BEKO who advised us that all warranties have been transferred to Comet. Comet say that we are not covered as the unit is being kept in an outbuilding. The Comet website currently says the unit only works in temperatures as low as 5c.

The unit has been discontinued and so information is no longer available on the BEKO site. Basically everyone has washed their hands of us.

Does anyone know what our rights are?

The only information I could find on the Beko site relating to that model is that its Climate Class is rated as 'SN' (10c to 32c). Unless the manual says otherwise or you can locate the original source of information stating -18c I don't know how you can effectively prove your arguement to Comet.

Maybe someone will be able to offer you advice on other possible routes you can take.

Mista_C is right, SN is 10c to 32c. The Maximum temperature of the freezing compartment however does go down to minus 18 c.
So I think you've got yourselves mixed up.
  • We're not mixed up.

Even the Comet site currently says it's operable at 5c. It was -15 though not -18, sorry.

Beko were the only brand we could find that made them specifically suitable for garages and so on and was why we chose them and that particular unit.

I found the manual on http://www.retrevo.com/support/Beko-CDA646-Refrigerators-manual/id/23001bh533/t/2/
Last part of page 4 says:
    INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
    1. The space in the room where the appliance is installed must not be smaller
    than 10 cubic metres.
    2. Do not put your fridge freezer in a cold room where the temperature is likely
to go below +5 degrees C (41 degrees F) during night time and/or especially
    in winter.
This fridge freezer has been designed to operate in ambient temperatures
    between +5 and +32 degrees C (41 and 90 degrees F) Therefore if the
appliance is installed in an unheated/cold room (eg: conservatory/annex/
shed/garage etc) then the appliance will not operate causing the freezer
compartment to run warmer and as a result the storage time of frozen food
    may be reduced.

This argument has been used for the trader to divest themselves of responsibility . I have used AEG freezers in unheated garages for thirty years without any problem. The real issue here is the make - BEKO. Easily the most unreliable brand on the market. Shoddily made, even prone to setting on fire. (Just google Beko and fire risk if you don't believe me.) Ok if they are very very cheap, but often you pay as much for these as a proper make like Miele or AEG. Avoid Beko in future. Ask any technician. Most will refuse to fix these as so many things can go wrong, and when the first problems appear, a load of others will come soon after. Sorry about your bad luck. The Comet issue is why I always buy from John Lewis btw.

Other posters have said that Beko/Comet are within their rights as freezers are not meant to work in garages, as I posted recently. This is off the Which? website:
Are there any freezers that you can keep in your garage?

Beko is the only manufacturer that claims its freezers can be kept in garages. This is because Beko uses a different refrigerant in its appliances, compared with other manufacturers. So, if you're specifically looking for a freezer for your garage, consider buying a Beko.
We've tested a number of Beko freezers down to -15°C, and they’ve all worked perfectly fine in our test lab.
Check out our reviews to see whether these appliances will keep your food safely frozen and how much they'll add to your energy bills. You can also find out which Beko freezers come top in our tests.

    I would advise the following:
    1. Ignore Which? I have wasted a fortune on their so-called Best Buys.I also saved a fortune by not subscribing to what is a very expensive service.
    2. Never buy Beko. They are widely acknowledged by technicians to be rubbish.
    3. Never buy from Comet - choose John Lewis or another shop with a reputation for fair trading.
