No way that you could run Vista on 256MB of RAM using a nine year old PC.
Stick with XP and buy more RAM. Is there a Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity sticker anywhere on the case?

as above vista will not run on that as it currently stands so you will be looking at XP or one of the low requirement linux distrobutions such as Linux Mint LXDE or Lubuntu, but this all depends on what you actually want to do with the system,
as other have put more ram would help a lot http://www.crucial.com/eu/systemscanner/ this will help tell you what type of ram your system can take and thne its a case of looking around for some cheapDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
They already have a licence for XP, so it may be just a matter of retrieving the key, backing up Drivers and then re-installing using an OEM disc. More RAM and perhaps Avast 6 complete the picture.0
