    If you're going straight in with the size bit to match the hole you're after, you will struggle, start small and build up the hole. Its quite normal to drill a hole using three or even four drill bits, each getting progressively bigger. If you did go straight in with the big drill bit, its quite possible the bit you're using is already blunt. Otherwise, are you leaning against the drill whilst drilling? You really have to push at the same time for the bit to bite.

    You really shouldn't need an SDS drill for this job.

    Thank you everybody. Now I'm happy to report a successful ending. In the end I changed my drill for one that included sds function. Took me 5 mins to completely get the cooker hood securely on the wall! :j
