First time references

Hello all - be grateful of a bit of advice.

Am currently arranging a string of viewings to rent a flat - I currently live with my folks and other than a few stints living with ex partners (not registered with landlords) I always have lived with them.

Now, all letting agencies seem to insist on references - will I be ok without one from a former landlord (I assume my folks can't give me one!). I can of course get employers and charcter references.

Hard to get an opinon on this - I will speak to the agencies in due course but wondered what you all think/am i wasting my time.

Thanks as always

  • A normal Credit reference check and employers reference should be ok. If you haven't rented how can they check and ask other Landlords for references? Also beware, the Agent may ask for proof of residence from where you have lived. If you can prove this you should be ok, usually if you are on the Electoral Roll this proof will come from your Credit reference check. Hope this helps.
  • I went through the same thing when I rented my flat - I didn't have any previous landlord refs as i'd lived with my parents, so I imagined this would go against me (which annoyed me because everyone has to start somewhere -how can you get refs if no-one takes a chance on you??!!). In the end, it wasn't a problem - the application form I filled out asked for 2 refs - employers and either character or landlord. Hopefully you'll have the same experience and be able to rent somewhere soon.

    Hope this helps :)
