Pooter swithing itself off!!

As above! Started by just switching monitor off, now the whole thing switches off and I have to reboot. Very frustrating when youare in the middle of something!! Oh, and complete technophobe here!

Do you think it is terminal or repairable? :(

Hi, it's a Medion desktop pc. It had a new heat sink (?) fan put in last year. I can hear the fan going when it decides to boot up.

On an amusing note, my daughter when she went to uni, rang up saying pretty much the same thing. Turned out she put her desktop right next to the radiator!

Sounds like overheating initially with the GPU (graphics fan okay? - won't be one if integral on motherboard or passive). If you have animals etc, you may find a dust build up inside - dust is a very good insulator. Initially, remove the power cord, open the side and very gently try removing as much dust as possible preferably with a can of air, but some use a vaccuum nozzle very gently.

If the monitor connector is on the motherboard backplate (next to the usb slots) then you have an integrated graphics chip, which may have a seperate fan, but expect not on the cheaper Medion models. If this is right, and dust removal does do the job - great!

If not, once you have checked the hdd/ram (more on this once you have checked the above), you may find that it is a motherboard issue, but at this stage until you have done more checks it is difficult to be precise.

Thanks for the reply. Boy, that sounds complicated to my technophobic brain! When bought many moons ago, it was not one of the cheaper Medions. It seems to stay on longer if I am on things like this forum, but I download games from a site called Big Fih Games and it seems to go off more when I am either downloading or in the middle of a game. Nothing on the casing feels hot, (should it if overheating??).

Just an idea, but why not try downloading and installing Speedfan, that will tell you the temps, you can then post on here, and get some better feedback.

Tou will have to register to downlaod it, don't do as I did, and click all the wrong download boxes - one criticism of this site is that the author has all sorts of downlaod options for other products at every turn, but persistence paid-off.

PS your comment about when if goes off, tends to confirma temp issue, as games will make the GPU/graphics chip work harder

How long after boot-up does it shut down?
Other possibility is a PSU on the way out-not an expensive or difficult job to change it. But check for dust build up first, and get yourself a can of air.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Got dog, 2 cats and carpets. May have to investigate it's hairyness on Friday when I've got more time. Otherwise, I might have to get a little man in!! Do you think it's wise that I attack it with the hoover first or do I resort to the little man who repairs things?
  • don't use a hoover as you may well break something! small brush and some breeze :)
    Friendly greeting!
