British Gas astronomical bills!

It's in the hallway. Isn't that normal.
Well it's a very common location. There are pros and cons beween locating the stat in the hall or the main living area. 20deg in a hall is OTT. Did you not start out complaining about apparently excessive consumption? No wonder (say the energy buffs here).
OK, the hottest largest radiator just before and immediately after the stat clicks off (satisfied) will be doing the most damage. Where is it and how big? I take it there is actually a rad in the hall? How hot does it get? Does the stat ever click off (satisfied)?
How is the daily consumption record coming on?0 -

Oh! that thought has never crossed my mind. It's in the hallway. Isn't that normal. I don't even know how thermostats work tbh! I just know that I set it to around 20 degrees when I get home and turn it down before I go to bed.
You can set the thermostat to anything you like when the heating is turned off - it won't make the slightest bit of difference!
How comfortable does the current setting feel to you? If it is toasty warm, then turn it down a couple of degrees and put on a jumper - it will save a lot of money. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Although not a free lunch the cheapest utility supply by some margin is COOP ENERGY. I just switched and nearly halved my bill, for dual fuel! Fixed montly £10.50 handling charges then electricity at 10.97p/kWhr and Gas at 3.2p/kWhr. Change Gas m3 to kWhr by multiplying by 11 and check for yourself your costs compared to this if you use any other supplier!0

Welcome to the forum. You can't have halved your bill by changing supplier! All you have done is set your DD at an unrealistically low level, which does not cover your actual consumption, and will result in a large catch up bill a few months later.
A comp site check on Co-Op Pioneer tariff using my own annual kWh figures tariff shows it as being only the 24th cheapest-and £194 more than the cheapest tariff on offer.
So perhaps you can substantiate how it is 'the cheapest utility supplier by some margin?
NB: your unit prices exclude VAT.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi I have been overcharged because of this metric/imperial meter reading. I run a small public house with living accomodation above. I signed up with British Gas Business in July/August 2006 and have been overcharged for over 5 years. I was paying £120 DD and they wanted to raise to approx £750 per month. My bill balance reached nearly £7.5k. Told them i couldn't possibly be using this much gas and tried to get them to come out check meter etc they refused. Offered to increase DD to £200 per month which they refused to do and told me that they would start legal proceedings and cut off supply, hence close down my pub!! I was 9 months pregnant at this time too. They didn't do this but nothing happened until i received another DD notification saying they were going to put it up to approx £1k a month. At this time i cancelled DD thinking there is no way i could possibly pay this. Heard nothing for a couple of months then received a letter saying they had decided to look into my account and had found they had been overcharging me for over 5 years. I received a refund of £1.7k and have submitted a letter of complaint didn't hear anything for 2 months called today was offered £50, then £120 then 10% of what i was owed, asked if they could call back next week as unsure as to what sort of complensation i should be asking for. Received a phone call 10mins later offering £340. Do you think this is reasonable or should i go to the ombudsman? haven't a clue what to do.
Obviously they've had money of mine, the stress of being pregnant and threatened with losing business, not wanting to help at all. I have also been trying to sell business for quite a while but found it difficult and energy costs have been a part of the problem.0 -
