Ways to rent other than private?

Hi all!
At the moment I am just finishing the final year of my degree in Cornwall, where my partner and I are renting privately. In June we will be moving up to Hertfordshire to be closer to our families again.
Our initial idea was to rent prviately for 6months and then look to buy our first house, but after reading up on these forums and the advice sheets and things, we realised that we would probably be throwing more money away on the mortgage interest rates than we would be renting for longer and trying to save a reasonable deposit.
Now the new plan (which can always be changed!) is that we rent for approx 2years whilst trying to save enough money for a decent deposit on a house. The catch is, initially we will both be working, but we will be getting married this August and looking to start a family then too, so the cheaper we can rent the better.
We have been told it is possible to rent through Housing Associations and Organisations, rather than privately, but how would we go about this and what are other people's experiences? We would need a 2bed house with garden (as we have 2dogs) and have a few towns we would be prepared to live in (as I already have a job secured on our return back to Hertfordshire). How much option do you get and is there any specific requirements you need to fit in?
Sorry for the life story, I just thought it may help to understand our situation.
Thanks in advance
Toni
