We will be moving in February to a new house (Via a mutual exchange with a housing association) where the tenant currently receives their phone and broadband etc. from Virgin Media, when we move in we plan to transfer over our Plusnet phone and broadband, now I spotted a phone socket with a BT logo on but I don't know whether it's still usable is there anyway to find out? also they have this horrible white box which has all the Virgin Media cables going in it hanging off the wall in the garden how would I get it tidied up or removed?
Many Thanks,

If there is a BT based line, then it will almost certainly have been disconnected-plug a corded handset in and see, dial 17070. You'll have to pay a fee whether a new line or a reconnection are required. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

VM wont remove the box on the wall as that would leave un-terminated cables running back to the street cabinet.Best bet would be to ring up & ask for an engineer to call out to re-attatch it & terminate the connections which,in reality,is in their interest as unterminated cables can cause problems on the network.0 -

Oh. well lets hope it won't be too much I shall have to ring up Plusnet first and see what they say and then get on to BT

Excellent thanks very much;)0 -
You don't say whether this is Virgin Cable or Virgin National - if the latter, the BT socket will be the Virgin connection for BB and Phone. If there is a separate Co-Ax feed for TV, then this will be true BB and not the ADSL kludge BT/Plusnet use, and is vastly preferable - if it exists.0

If you can go round & have a look you should see the telephone wires overhead attached to the house. If they are not there expect a big bill from BT to reconnect them.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0

Why? If you get BT to reconnect you, you'll then be in a line rental contract with them. Get Plusnet to do it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Do Plusnet do the overhead wires?Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0 -
BT Openreach do any physical reconnection if required-(no direct connection to BT Retail). You can book a line reconnection or install through any telcom you like, they engage OR as required. OR do not deal with the retail side.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Not true,My home as well as those in my estate are served by underground nodes, these can come off a main pole that can be quite a distance from your home & then run underground or they can come underground all the way from the exchange.0
