I grew up with my step-fathers name and was known by his name, when I had my children I def had a Blonde moment and registered my 1st child using stepfathers name and 2nd child using my birth name, I had just got so used to calling myself by step fathers name that it just came naturally. WhoopsTreat other's how you like to be treated.

And now I have the joy of having my foster granddaughter becoming my real granddaughter. Can't ask for anything better
UPDATE,
As of today 180919. my granddaughter is now my official granddaughter, adoption finally granted0 -
I was adopted by my step dad as a child, but there was and perhaps still is this technicality, in that you can only be adopted by two parents, which meant that my biological mum had to adopt me too. I know that this doesn't help answer whether as an adult you can go through the adoption process, but be aware that if you can, your mum will probably have to adopt you too.0

This is no longer the case since 2003 I believe. You can now adopt as a partner to the birth parent. :TGetting married Saturday 12th July 2014 :smileyhea
