Insurance question.
May seem a silly question but do you have to own the car to buy insurance to drive it? My mother in law is lending my wife her car for a month before we buy it from her ( she is getting too frail to drive and wants us to buy her a mobility scooter) Can we insure the car for my wife to drive while M.I.L. is lending us the car or do we have to wait until we actually purchase the car and own it? Hope this all makes sense - has been quite a long day at work!

No you don't need to own it - if you think of vehicles on hire purchase/lease, technically, although it might be registered in the users name, the ownership is still the finance company.
but in your case, it'd be best to chat to a local broker, rather than what might end up confusing situation, with one of the on line/phone insurers.
They WILL always ask whos name is it registered in, in any case.

not a silly question at all. most companies will do this for you. i have in the past and not had any problems.0

You need to be careful and make sure that MIL cancels her own insurance. Whilst you misses is driving it there isnt a problem but if the vehicle was stolen whilst parked then you would have double insurance and both policies will almost certainly exclude claims where another insurance policy covers it so you get into a headache of arguing which of the 2 policies should cover the claim (or more likely end up with the 2 insurers spliting the claim so 2 excesses to pay, 2 NCDs affected etc)All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Some insurance companies will load the premium if you are not the registered keeper, although a good broker should be able to find you a deal.
Could your MIL not add her daughter to her policy as a named driver if its only for a month?0
