Tesco grocery assistant job or McDonalds?

I've recently noticed that theres a job for a grocery assistant at my local Tesco Metro store and I'm contemplating whether to apply for it now. I just wanted to ask anyone who works or has worked at Tesco what its like to work for them as an employer and also if they know anything about what more job role itself would entail (other than stocking and tidying up fruit and veg in the grocery section tongue.gif). I currently work part time at McDonalds (which i don't like to be honest frown.gif but am grateful that i do actually have a job in this climate) i get paid £5 per hour which isn't too bad but i've heard with Tesco you get paid around £6.20 is this right? Also, the hours itself are 6 hours just on a Sunday, can i change this after a while? Also, would i be able to change positions after a while and for example work on the checkout/tills and not be stuck in grocery? In addition, as i'm a student (but moving out for next year) would i be able to transfer to another store in another town despite working only around 6 months with them (that is if i get the job)?

Hope i can get some good advice as i'm not sure whether to apply for Tesco and quit McDonalds....

My friend works for Tesco he was on good wage stacking shelves with lots of overtime on a 16 hour contract.

They have banned all paid overtime so he is struggling on basic 16hours despite the work being there (cages sat out the back unpacked) if he does do any overtime he doesn't get paid he gets time off instead so after 15 years they have screwed him over.

Money isn't bad but the way they treat staff isn't great.

Well you could apply for the tesco role and ask them these questions. If you are offered the job but decide not to take it you still have your current job.

@ Lisa B after 15 years I would have asked for a contract with increased hours rather than rely on the overtime! I certainly wouldn't be doing overtime for time off!

i work at tesco on the tills and am on £7 an hour, i moved to tills from stock control. Im contracted 28 hours and normally there is overtime although there is a ban atm. I enjoy my job on the whole.
  • With McD you might get a free burger (but you might not want to eat it!)

With Tesco after a qualifying period you get a discount on your shopping which could work out to be worth quite a bit.

Depending on whether it takes you over a benefit threshold/cutoff it might be worth trying to arrange hours so you can do both jobs.

I don't know about Tesco but I do know that one of my niece's housemates is able to transfer their job at Sainsbury's from home town to university town and back again during term times and holidays.

Tesco. A better variety of options and opportunities.

Both my sons work for Sainsburys whilst at university so have dual store contracts. They work at the store near home in hols and work near their unis in term time. Being an ex Employment Adviser my experience with Tesco is not the same. Tesco are very restrictive on recruitment and if you want to move stores because it is better for you (not uni say) then the chances are pretty slim, so bear this in mind. Ideally I would advise looking at both jobs if it suits you. These days employers don't need to help you if it doesn't suit them. Good luck.

To go against the grain; McDonalds do very good career progression if you're serious about it. If you perform well you can get on the trainee manager scheme and then progress rapidly - and then with enough experience leave McDonalds for something better! :D

Apply to Tesco and make the decision when you get offered the job. You'll have a much better sense yourself of the right choice to make.
