If you can, select a local nursery and the cheapest way to buy trees is bare rooted ones that have been field grown and dug up. It is always worth looking at the discount supermarkets as well particularly Lidl and Aldi that do some good deals. Do your research, get a tree that is idea for your needs and location, do not buy it simply because it apppears cheap.Still waiting for Parking Eye to send the court summons! Make my day!0

lidl & aldi do cheap bare rooted trees ~ 4 pounds or so for an Apple/ pear/ cherry trees. Planted it last year, has got a few leaves showing up.0

With regards to fruit trees, obviously check for eventual size first, as it has been said.
Another reason for a tree being cheap is that it might be very young. Now these nothing wrong with this at all. They are not inferior quality, it simply means you will have to wait a few years for a crop. But assuming you arn't going to move house or whatever, this really shouldn't be a problem
We bought a plum tree from Wilkinsons 4 years ago for £5.00 and planted on our allotment. We got our first crop (a very big crop as well) last year. Which is how long it said it would take to crop on the label. :T0 -
Depends what sort of trees you want really and how large! It's usually cheaper to buy online than in a garden centre, though at least in a garden centre you can see what you're getting. If you're in no rush and want native trees rather than fruit ones you can buy little bareroot trees a metre high for a couple of pounds. I bought the native trees and bushes for my hedge from: http://www.naturescape.co.uk/ and would thoroughly recommend them, they were all good quality and all seem to be growing well!0
