My parents are going to sell their family house - they bought it when they had 4 children living at home, and now they don't have any still under their roof. But they intend to buy something smaller very close by.
My in-laws went the other way.
they are retired now, but just a few years before retirement they moved from a 3 bed bungalow to a 5 bed house.
The 3 bed bungalow was self build many years ago and required quite a bit of maintenance, hence why they moved to a new build 5 bed house.
The thing is three of the 5 bedrooms are small.
They do sometimes talk about downsizing in the future, but I can;t see them doing that to be honest.:wall:

True, and if you have a large family home it's worth doing but sometimes the difference between the cost of a 2 bed smaller home and a 4 bed family home in the same area can be very small after moving costs, stamp duty, etc. have been deducted. Even the running costs might not be very far apart if you are moving from a modern 4 bed to an older 2 bed property.
You often see people on say "My house is my pension" and find that they expect to downsize from a 3 bed house to a 2 bed house and expect the proceeeds to fund their retirement. Perhaps it will if the 3 bed house is in Central London and the 2 bed house is in Hull.0 -
