I'm off to London for 3 days taking a 14 year old with me and totally confused as to what's the best way to pay for travel once we've arrived. We arrive by train at Kings Cross on the Saturday lunch time and leave on the Monday evening. I've read a bit about the PAYG oyster card and was thinking this might be the best option. If it is, do I buy it once there and where from? how much should you put on each one to last the 3 days? I'm pretty sure we'll be staying within zones 1 and 2.
Thanks
Thanks

If you have a family railcard buying a travelcard with that each day will probably be best. £2 per child (normally £3) and about a fiver for an adult (I think the new Oyster cap is around £8 a day).
You might also benefit from a free Bite Card if you're using mainline stations. 20% off at a range of concessions - no charge.

Unfortunately I don't have a railcard, I didn't bother getting one this time as our train tickets were quite cheap so it worked out cheaper not getting it.
Thanks, I haven't heard of the Bite Card, i'll have a look in to that, thanks for adding the link

Daily travel cards still look best to me. £7 for you and £3.20 each for kids at off peak times.0 -
Oyster would be a waste of time for you - you'd have to pay (and reclaim) a £5 deposit on the card and (assuming you are going to be doing a fair bit of to-ing and froi-ing in zones 1/2) it isn't going to save you anything on fares over the one day travelcard option.
And your daughter would be an adult for Oyster PAYG purposes unless you bought (in advance) an Oyster zip card for her - costs £10, non refundable. For travelcard purposes she is a child.
Your tickets to/from Kings Cross (make sure you hang on to them) may get you 2 for 1 admission to some attractions:
