We approached a morgage broker and made an appointment, unfortunatley thay cancelled on us and instead took some income details from us over the phone where they then quoted us a morgage figure. We got cut off due to bad reception and they never phoned back.
I got the impression that as we are first time buyers it wasnt really worth bothering coming to meet with us. Not off to a very good start however we are going to contact other morgage brokers - the last one was reccommended to us- so can anyone advise on a few questions we can ask the broker before we go ahead and make anymore appointments? And anything we need to look out for and avoid?
And will a morgage broker sell the best deal for his clients or the best deal for him?
As it stands from the info we received we have been advised to save 10% and self certify.
Thank you in advance

When looking for a broker or Independant financial advisor (are they the same I dont know?) ask if they are whole of the market. If they are then that means they have access to almost all mortgages out there and they should be unbiased and pick the best one for you.
We're first time buyers too and it is quite daunting. We ended up going with an IFA that was recommended by the estate agent we are buying the house from.
I armed myself with loads of information, interest rates etc, had decided what type of mortgage we wanted (repayment, fixed for 5 yrs). The fact that we had an idea seemed to help and I felt confident that I wasn't getting ripped off when the mortgage we settled for was of an expected interest rate (altho we got unlucky as it was in the middle of the interest rate rise last month).0
