restrictions to online purchase of theatre tickets

This week I have bought 2 tickets online for the Royal Court theatre in London. I was being very careful in my seat selection as some seats have a restricted view. I chose 2 seats near the end of a row but was refused these because there would have been a single unsold ticket at the end of the row. I assume that they are hoping for a group of 3 people to choose these seats but I have never seen this approach before in any other theatre.
Perhaps they will allow 2 seats to be sold nearer the date but it was only for mid March, not several months ahead.
