Watching tv programmes on an iPad without wifi connection

Hi. I'm afraid I'm a bit clueless when it comes to technology. Lovely DH bought me an iPad for Christmas because I work away a lot. I've downloaded the BBC and 4oD apps but wondered how it works. Can I download a programme (or film from lovefilm or iTunes) when I'm in a wifi area and then watch in my room where there's no wifi or do I have to have a wifi connection in order to view? Although I have a 3G card I don't want to spend the money on watching films if I can avoid it.

Thank you for any help and advice.

    You want these Apps.

    TVCatchup
    BBC iPlayer

These two are the best IMHO

    ITVPlayer
    4oD
    Demand5
    SkyGo

These are the main TV Apps, they are all streamed so you'll need a fast'ish Internet connect (Wi-Fi or 3G) so extra costs could be incurred if you go over your data allowance.

The other way is to download from iTunes, you can then watch when you want without an Internet connection, but you have buy these in the first place.
