Why would renting a bedsit mean the CTax would be covered by the landlord? It would be paid by the one who's in work, wouldn't it?
They need to find somewhere where they can both be lodgers in the same house, I reckon. I wonder if they're both in Newport?0 -

I was under the impression that one of the factors that defined a bedsit was that the landlord was responsible for the council tax? I'm sure it was mentioned on a thread on here last week. Apologies if I'm dishing out incorrect info!0 -
If a bedsit is fully self contained, ie nothing is shared with other occupants of the full property, then it would have its own CT. (More of a studio than a bedsit though IMO) If there are common areas kitchen, lav, bathroom and so on then LL pays CT as HMO owner. There is nothing to stop the LL charging a proportion of that to any occupant who cannot supply a Uni exemption cert or refusing to take on non students.0

Ah, so not just any bedsit but a very particular kind of one. My own experience of bedsits is that occupants always shared the bathroom.

Hang on a minute. Tbs has it right but why naff around the houses?
The Op has a right to live in a home that is not prejudicial to her health.
She should call the housing Environmental Health team in to undertake what is called a HHSRS assessment ( Housing Health and Safety Rating System) The EHO will come and look at the house and liaise with the landlord to put the house right and comply with his/her legal obligations to maintain a property in safe condition.
difficult to know whether the property is or should be a HMO, if there is a HMO license on display then one can assume that it is. otherwise the EHO will ensure it complies with the requirement to have the license. if it needs one:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

There is a cold snap forecast and as such it would be an idea to get organised if you can. There are a few things that you can do to help yourself.
1. Buy Duct Tape and tape over any drafts at the windows
2. Ensure that you keep your doors closed to keep in the heat. Use draft excludes too.
3. If you can buy (or borrow) a better heater, do so. An oil-filled heater will work out cheaper to run than a convector heater and so on.
4. Use a thermostat on your heating. It is often easy to over heat a room and not realise it.
5. Think outside the box. Would it be cheaper to visit the pub every-so-often for a drink than heat your home? Could you move into your heated bedroom until the worst is over?
I sympathise with you. i lived in a very cold flat, luckily I did have the finances to heat it (at the time). I doubt I would be able to now!0 -
Hi Lynz - the later HMO discussion isn't applicable to the OPs current home from the sound of it.It's just some of us going off on a slightly diversionary loopdifficult to know whether the property is or should be a HMO, if there is a HMO license on display then one can assume that it is.

I'd be retreating to the bedroom and setting that up as a sitting-room for the duration only coming out to dash to the kitchen in all of my jumpers and coats. I've lived like that in the past and it's possible to make it tolerable. Especially if you have alcohol in the house....0
