Cat urine infection?

Me again. :(

I'm a tad worried about Frankie, he peed on a pile of (clean!) washing and again peed in my cupboard on a pile of my clean clothes (argh) their all in the washing now so not a huge deal and I didn't think much of it other than maybe his litter wasn't as clean as he likes or he was marking his territory or something.

Anyways today my neice had stayed over and she has a huge bag which the cat climbed into, she lifted the bag and he still sat in it and let her carry him (didn't look scared or try to jump out) then she noticed he was peeing so she set the bag down, he came out and walked across the floor still peeing, he didn't seem aware he was doing it though until he noticed his paws and legs were wet.

So i'm wondering if there is a possibility of a urine infection? He seems to be going into his litter okay and doesn't seem in any pain. I am taking him to the vet next month for neutering but obv if there is a possibility of this I will take him this week.

Another thing, how do I get rid of the smell from my floor? It's laminate and I have mopped twice and can still smell it - it seems kind of sweet smelling but still not a nice smell all the same. Any advice? Neices bag has been cleaned with wipes/anti bac and soaked in a basin so smell is gone from that. Cat has been cleaned, he likes playing in bath whilst its running so I just ran the water and he jumped in.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Is he drinking more than usual? Excessive urine with a sweet smell can be a symptom of diabetes. I would probably move up the vet appointment to rule out a health issue ASAP as he doesn't sound quite right.
For cleaning the urine, vinegar or biological washing powder are both good (and fairly cheap!) products to use.
  • Awww poor Frankie - personally I'd take him as soon as poss to have him checked over. Having had a cat with kidney problems, one of the first signs that he had a urine infection etc was that he started weeing in "odd" places.

You could try bicarb of soda for the smell - not sure how this would work on laminate tho'?

I wouldn't say he is drinking more than usual, he drinks a fair amount but not excessively. I've gone out and came home as was wondering if the smell was all in my head but it's not, can still smell it even though I've left the windows open. Might use bleach as had used floor cleaner.

Going to go a trip to shop for bicarb of soda and I will sprinkle that down and leave before hoovering it up.

Will give the vet a phone tomorrow and explain, best to get it checked then even if nothing is wrong I can just get him booked in for his neutering. Was wondering if this was him starting to spray but he hasn't been holding his tail up or anything so don't think its that.

Thanks for the advice again. I'm used to cats but not male ones and our cats at home didn't have many health problems, Molly had a urine infection a few times but was easily sorted with tablets from vet.

About my pet insurance - its with PDSA, do I only need to use it if he needs expensive treatment like an op or long term supply of meds? To be honest I haven't really had time to read it over much as I only got it a few months ago when I got the cat.

bicarb of soda and water mix used to wipe the laminate and windows open - hope it clears the smell!!
I did mop it up with water and floor cleaner as soon as it happened and thought that would do the trick but it didn't , if this doesn't work I don't know what to do argh !

Most normal cleaners either don't break down the ammonia in urine, or contain ammonia anyway. Vinegars or biological cleaner will clean up pet urine accidents very well, otherwise you can buy specific cleaning products from petshops for pet urine.

bicarb seems to have done the trick. thanks guys will keep you updated on how he gets on with vets ! My floor is now all white and powdery as I mixed it with water and now the water has dried but going to leave that til tomorrow, hoover then mop again.
  • at the vets pick up a product called urine off , it gets rid of smell that you can smell plus the smell that only cat can smell
if cat can smell it he is liable to do it again insame spot.
