Idiot paperboy's fault, end of.0

Although I think it was the paper boys fault for leaving the bike there I would offer £50 to the boys Dad as a 50% split and move on.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

So your son was sitting in his car, checking his mirrors just before he pulled off and didn’t see a paper boy riding a bike heading right for where the car was parked? If he didn’t know the paperboy was there it sounds like shocking road awareness, if he did it sounds worse. I wouldn’t fight that, the paperboys parents only have to make one phone call to your insurance company and you are in danger of paying a massive premium.
I think the government figures say a bike is worth approx 10% of the original purchase value after only two years (see cycle to work scheme). They’d be hard pressed to argue with the government figures so you might only owe them a tenner. Pay up, it’s your sons fault and it’s just easier for everybody. You don’t want insurance companies involved, that just pushes up everybody’s premiums. Try and call it a goodwill gesture if you don’t want to admit liability.0 -
Who is to say he didn't do all of these?
If he had he should of seen the obstruction, the paper boy did a silly thing i would do as others say and go 50/50 on replacing the bike.
In the eye's of the law i'm pretty sure it will be the op son who is held liable, do the right thing and give them £50 for a new bike. Argos sell some ok bikes for a £100!0 -
We are hearing a one sided story and commenting on it.
Facts are that OP's son had a road accident where damage to someone else's property ocurred.
The OP should remember every accident has to be reported to the insurer even if it is settled between the two parties themselves. The insurers will probably ask that a letter is obtained from the other party stating that all matters have been settled in connection with the incident. This is just in case the other party suddenly has nightmares etc and claims for trauma etc.0 -
Wonder if the OP will be back with an update0

Yes would be nice to know what happens but a few people have criticised her son so maybe we won't find out. Hope we do though.
I think he was very unlucky running over the bike but ultimately not blameless hence the fact that I think he should pay half and not a quarter.Don't grow up. Its a trap!
Peace, love and labradors!0 -
The op's son hit a stationary object, he is to blame. Whats more worrying is the fact he was in the car when the paperboy got off the bike, just as well he got out of the way in time.0

When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can.
[
This every single time, same applies to car parks as well. The driver of the vehicle is responsible for it when its moving, so they either make sure they reverve into the drive and SAFELY drive off or accept the consequences when they knock something or someone over.
Saying that I would try to go 50/50 as if the OP is to be believed the cyclist left their cycle behind a car that had its engine running (not sure that I think that is the entire story unless the paperboy was particulary thick).0
