Buying a car

Hello all,
I'm looking to replace my 53 plate Citroen C2 with a similar sized car and obviously a bit newer. The problem is, I'm bloody clueless with cars, and although I know what I want and have found some possibilities, I don't really know what to check for in a used car. Could anyone direct me towards an idiots guy to used car buying or give me some general advice? I plan to sort my own finance unless the dealership offer me a good deal and I haven't ruled out buying a new car if the price is right as I've found some good deals (I'm looking to spend between £6k - £7k).
Thanks in advance.
