new driver car insurance

my son is about to pass his driving test. Has a renault clio worth about £4000. Best quote so far £2008 fully comp with privilege after he takes pass plus and with his mum on the policy as an additional driver. Any ideas as to how we can get this down or does it sound about right? Do I really need to get him his own policy or should I stick him on mine until he's a bit older and wiser?

  • Hi - have you tried https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk or quinn-direct ?

They both specialize in young drivers and offer pass plus discounts.

    Others are elephant or endsleigh.

Alternatively have you thought of a lower value car with TPFT cover? £1000 buys a respectable 10 year old small car and insurance will be distinctly cheaper. They do say that 50% of new drivers have an accident with the first year of driving!

    Best of luck

Sticking him on your policy is insurance fraud or "fronting". If he is the main driver he must have the policy in his name, otherwise the insurance company is within their rights to void the policy in the event of a claim, with all the associated repercussions.
