Which order to get avast anti virus?

Hi all 
Silly question time! My laptop came with a trial of Norton :eek: I've had it since before Christmas and know I need to get it off. I'm just a bit unsure of the order to do things. Should I download Avast, disconnect from the internet and uninstall Norton or do I need to get the Norton removal thingy first? Appreciate any advice.
