Holiday Deposit Dilemma - Advice needed!

I need some advise, or rather a "What would you do?"...

My partner's sister is getting married in Cyprus this August, and we booked last year to go (2 adults and 1 child) at a cost of £2100 with Thomas Cook. We had a brilliant savings scheme set up so we would be able to afford to go...BUT...My partner lost his job and thus we used the savings to live on until he thankfully found another job.
Now as we dont have any savings we cannot afford to go. The holiday balance is due in the beginning of May and I have paid the non refundable deposit of £525.
Do I transfer the holiday til next year at with the £35 per person per change admin fee (which could possible £35x3x6!), and risk having the same situation happen again to us, or do I just cancel the holiday and loose the £525 deposit?
When we go on holiday it is usually to a Haven park, or Centre Parcs, so this is a huge extra cost for us.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Is the £35 x 3 x 6 (£630) correct? ..... If so opting to lose the deposit is a no brainer.

    explain the £35 X 3 X 6

    Whats the X 6 for?
  • The £35 x 3 x 6 is the admin fee of per person per change EG if i wanted a different date, airport and destination it would be £105 per person to change, and with having 3 of us it would be £315 to change - just realised I should have put 3 instead of 6!
But the admin fee would still be £315.

I need some advise, or rather a "What would you do?

As the question is "what would I do", I'll answer it based on my being in your position, the little info I have which may or may not reflect your actual situation and I will rephrase the question.....

"With limited savings and a partner only recently returned to full time employment, would I pay out £315 to save a deposit of £525 and commit myself to a £2,100 holiday in 2013 in the hope that I would be able to find the money to pay for the holiday in a years time?"

For me that is a flat NO.

My priorities would be to review my finances, get some savings behind me and see where I was in 2013. :)

So the question is are you going to spend out an extra £200 to save £300 -plus the cost of whatever the holiday has gone up by. for next year ? That'd be a no.

Surely though your travel insurance covers you and you can claim the deposit back when you cancel.

Does travel insurance cover for loss of job and cant afford to go?

To the OP you have to be sensible and lose the deposit IMO, you may well be able to find a cheaper holiday next year anyway

Travel insurance often covers redundancy. It depends on the policy, some no- frills policies may not.

Another option would be to offer the holiday to someone else going to the wedding and just have the name change cost.
