skirting boards

Our puppy has had a great time over the past few months using our skirting boards as a teething toy. He has now stopped doing this and we are going to remove them and replace these ourselves. However, we wondered if we measured what we need exactly would one of the big DIY stores cut them to measure for us?
Also, he has done the same to one or two of the door frames and we wondered are door frames just vertical skirting boards or are they something completley different?

from the diy chains, at least, skirting is normally sold in packs of 5 or so, and in single lengths, usually 6 or 8ft long. they may cut it but i guess you would still have to pay for the fulll amount.

i think the door frame part you are talking about is the architrave, again sold in lengths at the sheds or in a pack with enough for one side of a door and ready mitred at the ends.

    hope this helps
Please note, we've had to remove your signature because it was sh*te!
  • Also you will need either an electric mitre saw or mitre block to get the correct angles for the joins (round the corners). If you have a lot to do may be worth investing in an electric saw.

thanks for the advice bockster and edthedead
  • As a 'just replacing my skirts and archi's person'(:D) I can advise that TBH, most of the big DIY chains won't cut it to size as a rule - they will just cut lengths small enough to fit in your car, but they charge for that.

Most lengths of skirting, and architrave (the trim around the door frame) will fit in most cars - I've got a Citroen AX (tiny! :D) and I can get them in there without having to leave the boot open, quite easily.

The skirts are usually sold in 2.4m lengths and archi's in 2.1m lengths (in the DIY shops anyway) and you can fit them with either 'No More Nails' type stuff and/or oval headed nails.

It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it - just remember the old adage - measure twice and cut once! :D

If funds are tight and you can't afford an electric saw (or are not confident in using one) then just get a hand mitre saw - about £7-£10. It's a saw that is fixed into a mitre box that you can set to whatever angle you need, and is easy enough to use - albeit hard on the arms after a while! B&Q, Screwfix etc sell them.

Or if you have a standard saw, you can just buy a plastic mitre box separately for a couple of quid and use that.

Have a nosey around Wickes or B&Q and ask the staff if you are stuck - Wickes staff in particular I find to be very helpful.

Come back to us again if ness - there's always lots of useful advice on here - hopefully inc mine?! ;)
  • These are pretty basic diy jobs, but if you have never done them before it can be tricky.

  • B&Q Warehouse sell architrave sets - all the bits you need ready mitred!

And I bought some easi-fit skirting from Homebase at half price, they even sell special posts to use with this skirting in the corners so you don't have to worry about getting mitres correct, just slot in 2 straight pieces of wood.

    Anything to make life easier!

Good site that! Couldn't open your 2nd link though, but easily found in the A-Z on there.

    Thanks - very useful!
