I am fed up to the back teeth with HMRC getting my tax situation incorrect - then rather than refunding what they owe me, by way of overpaid income tax - demanding even more - then to add to my misery - totally ignoring my repeated letters (sent by signed for recorded delivery) - which I sent to them at their request, (by a certain date) - I know that they have been received - so why not update me ?
I have had letters sent (again by Recorded Delivery), 4 months ago - to "COMPLAINTS" at HMRC totally ignored - when HMRC's own charter - requires, at least written confirmation of receipt within 14 days - TOTALLY IGNORED......

Anyway - I have decided to try "self assessment" - which, at least will give me some control over my tax situation
I need to find my UTR - supposedly on "certain documents" sent by HMRC - but it is not on my P45's or any of 9 Tax Coding Notices (that I have been sent since last April !!)
Where will I find it ?

  • I'm pretty sure that HMRC will give you a UTR when you apply for self-assessment, if you haven't already got one.
A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove you don't need it.

You don't get a UTR until you register for self assessment. UTR - Unique Tax Reference and is of the format 12345 67890

    That is incorrect
According to http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/register.htm#2 - you NEED a UTR in order to register
I don't have a UTR - (at least - not on any of my HMRC paperwork)....
and once registered - HMRC then send you a UTR - Dooooh !! (This makes no sense at all)

According to that link you only need the UTR if you have previously completed a self assessment return. This is to stop you ending up with multiple UTRs.

If you have never had a UTR then you need to download form SA1, complete and submit it. I don't think you can register online in this instance.
If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it

My wife didn't need a UTR to register this last year. Did it over the phone, far easier.
