    1 watt = approx £1 a year if on 24/7.

So going back to the original post that dehumidifier would use between £390 and £620 a year worth of electricity.

If used 24/7.... £50 a month again assuming 24/7 usage.

  • hi - i've got a really daft question about dehumidifiers :o

do they just extract moisture from the air - or do they pick up liquids too?

i have to dry my washing indoors during winter - so have set up a washing line in a room that i use to store my homebrew - will the dehumidifier draw liquid from my demijohns (or water filled airlocks)?

should i dry the washing somewhere else - or would it be ok in same room as my wine - with dehumidifier on?
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
    made loads last year

It will dry your washing too, most have a laundry mode.

Water from your clothes evapourates into the air, and is then extracted from the air by the dehumidifier.

Yep, I bought an Ecoair DW122FW Simple from www.breathingspace.co.uk just last week. Cheapest price I could find on the net, delivered by a very good courier next day. I selected this model as it has to be quiet (on the landing) and used at night when the temperature drops.

Very impressed with it so far and it removes unbelievable quantities of water.

Nice, let us know how you get on with it. I see the ecoair 122 Simple is no longer available on breathingspace.co.uk and Amazon's own stocks have run out.

I'm tempted to take a punt on a compressor one from Screwfix.

I wouldn't recommend it. I have had both and the desiccant models work so much better.

Less noise, less time on, give a gentle warm air, extract more water faster. They are leagues ahead in my opinion.

Thanks again lstar337. I'm currently borrowing a friends compressor type. It does get a cupful of water or so out of the air after a wee while so it's working, although I have no idea if a dessicant type would withdraw more or quite simply if there's no more to extract.

I was all set to order a dessicant type but the longevity of them seems questionable to say the least, and reading you had 2 broken ones out of the box didn't inspire confidence. Amazon has many good user comments on the ecoair 122 simple and the meaco dd8l which seem to be the most popular 2 dessicant types and quite a few of the 5 star reviews have been added to as time passes to say they have failed. The compressor ones seem a lot more robust - a little noisier maybe, but these dessicant types seem too fragile.
