Pre-Payment Meters

Hi

I am nearing the end of paying off some outstanding debts via Pre Payment Meter.

British Gas for Gas & Scottish Power for Electric.

I am thinking of ringing both suppliers to make final payments via Debit Card and then asking to have the meters removed to go onto direct debit.

How easy is this process? Are they likely to agree? Am I likely to save money?

Thanks

The process of ringing is easy. Whether they'll agree is another matter, because the meters, as you say, were installed to recover a debt.
Both will do a credit check prior to replacing the meter so you don't have a good credit history you may not get them replaced without paying a deposit.
Once they're out, you will almost certainly save money.

    Hi stokelady,

If you have cleared your balance we will change the meter however we would ask you to pay the cost of having the meter changed around £50.00 for electricity. We will also ask that you pay a security deposit of £150.00, this would be refundable (with interest) after 12-months as long as all payments were received on time.

    Kind regards

PPM's charge at the same rate as Standard tariff, so if you switch to an online discounted tariff you will save some money.

Thank you for the replies - actually rang Scottish Power and they said it would be no problem having the meter taken out - they failed to mention a deposit !!
  • I have just moved from n power to EBIco .If you have a pre payment meter or not its the same for every one.
Its a not for profit energy supplier with a simple flat rate for all.
No daily charge. If it works for you please pass it on.
