Costa Concordia Sunk

Any of you who have a cruise booked on the Costa Concordia need to contact your travel agent as it is currently laying on its side in the Med. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16558910
Hard to believe a modern super cruise ship could end up like this in fair seas.

With all due respect seeing as the ship has just sunk, I think Costa Cruises will have more immediate issues than dealing with future booking on the vessel.
Yes people booked on the Concordia will have to speak to their travel agents at some point, but they'll get no sense today!0 -
What a horrible thing to happen, I feel for those affected

"Women and children first" seems to have been ignored. Is this phrase valid these days? Surely if your missus or kids dont swim, youre going to ignore that phrase and make sure your own family is safe. Particularly as half the lifeboats appear to be under water, leaving half the passengers to jump off the side of the boat and swim to shore.illegitimi non carborundum0

That's never crossed my mind, so if a boat capsizes and lays on it's side, I guess it cuts down the number of lifeboats in half

I would suggest it cuts the number of usable lifeboats to zero as the lifeboats are designed to launch with the vessel vertical not horizontal.
That said, the empty davits in the various news reports and quayside full of lifeboats would hopefully indicate the majority launched, no doubt prior to ship keeling over. The MSE Dictionary

It hasnt sunk,it has merely heeled over. If the driver had any sense, he would have kept it in deeper water,it would have settled more or less upright on its bottom, the lifeboats could have been launched, passengers would have been clearer which way was UP and the ship would have been easier to recover...we await the real truth.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

That's what I meant, usable. Most modern cruise ships overbear on the number of of lifeboats to account for the fact some may be rendered unuseable. If the driver had any sense, he would have kept it in deeper water,it would have settled more or less upright on its bottom, the lifeboats could have been launched, passengers would have been clearer which was was UP and the ship would have been easier to recover...we await the real truth.
Its very easy when things like this happen to sit in the comfort of our own homes and criticise. However none of us were there and none of us know the full facts. I'm 100% certain that when that ship left port none of the crew intended the cruise to end up how it did on Friday night.
Ive see many reports, some saying that being in such shallow water added to the problems. However other schools of thought sugegst that the location of the ship made things a lot easier, for example many passengers swam to safety, which would have been unlikely in deeper waters further out.
The Captain and another crew member have already been arrested for manslaughter. I don't know much about Italian law or their legal system, but I hardly think this development will help an open and just investigation where lessons can be learned by all?0
