Laptop repair - out of warranty

Hi
Would love some advice regarding a broken laptop...
My brother kindly bought us a Lenovo Thinkpad for Christmas 2010. We only use in it the home (ie it is not carted about to lots of places) and is used just for the internet & storing photos.
As of last week, it bust & we have been told that the hard drive is completely broken. Can be fixed for £100 but the repair shop guy kindly told us that we have a good case to get Lenovo to fix it, even out of warranty, as a hard drive should not be breaking after such a short time.
Lenovo are having non of it.
Are we resigned to having to shell out for repair or do you think I should take it further wit Lenovo?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks

you would need to get an independent report (the computer repair guy can probably provide this). You then need to go to the RETAILER, i.e. the person it was bought from, along with a proof of purchase, (receipt if you dont have a receipt a bank statement showing the date of purchase will do). And the report. State that you are exercising your right under the SOGA (sale of goods act) and that you would like it repaired.
Out of interest who was the retailer?0 -
Thank you. The slight compliation is my brother lives in the USA and bought it there...He is going to try & find the receipt for me & we'll take it from there.0

Ah, the SOGA wouldn't be applicable then, as far as i am aware, Neither would the DSR because i presume that he either bought it in store or had it delivered to him. And no you in the UK. I am unaware of if and what the equivilant (spelling?) of the SOGA would be in the states. But i would think the retailer would require the laptop to either be picked up from him or taken into a store in the states. It would cost you nearly £100 to send it back. My advice would be to pay for a repair. But as i dont know anything about the how the law would work for an item bought in the states someone else maybe able to advise further.
Hope that helps a little0 -
Have you checked if the hard drive itself has an extended warranty. Worth going onto the hdd manufacturer's website to check. Are you sure its definately the hdd, you could try getting hold of an external 2.5 sata enclosure and hooking up to another PC to see if you can read it.0

The Better Business Bureau may be of some help with the American aspect.0
