Car Tax Refund

There are no admin charges when you apply for a refund, so your calculation is sound. If you are looking to send it back this month then make sure you send it in enough time to give DVLA time to process it before the 31st January. If they get it after that date then you will only get nine months back."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

£7 charge if you dont have the current disc to send back.
And you can only get a refund if the car is in your name.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I could be wrong but im sure as long as the tax is posted by the last day of the month then the full refund will be given regardless of when they receive it.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

That's correct according to the refund form.0 -
Its refunded from the application date, but obviously they will be dubious if you fill the form in dated in November and they don't receive it until February lol. The amount you receive back will be however many months is left on a 12 month disk. You don't get any extra back (other than the months left) if you paid the extra 10% for a 6 month disk.
ALWAYS SEND IT RECORDED DELIVERY. DVLA have a habit of losing everything and if your tax disk gets "lost" during the gauntlet they call internal mail you will lose. It costs less than £2 for recorded delivery.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
Does anyone know how the car tax refund is worked out, say for example I taxed my car for a year for £215, then sent the tax disc to the DVLA with 10 months left to run for a refund what would that refund be, My calculations are 215/12 then multiply by 10 for a £179 refund or are there other costs to take into account like admin etc.

I have found posting the day or two after expiry but dating it before expiry, will get you the full refund. Obviously if you send it a long time after it may not work.
You don't get a 100% pro rata refund on a 6 month disc as there is an admin fee built in to the cost of the 6 month discs.......Though quite why it only costs them £9.50 extra in costs to handle a Band D car 6mth disc but £46 to handle a band M car 6mth disc....... eludes me.0 -

According to direct.gov the handling charge is 10%
If you have a six-month tax disc you paid an extra ten per cent handling charge when you bought it. This is not included as part of your refund.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
And your point is?....
EDIT Ok I see your point, you thought I was unaware of the 10% handling charge....No, I was making a point as to why it costs them more to handle an application for a Band M car than it does to handle an application for a band D car.0 -

I thought, you thought it was a set fee rather than percentage I can see you know its a percentage now.
I don't have the answer to that but I suspect they see it as being fairer to those who emit less pollution, they pay less extra for buying a 6 month tax disk than a higher polluter, they then cover that charge with "handling charge"Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
