The timing chain failure on these vehicles is quite common and nissan will do anything they can to avoid coughing up. The Nissan Navara also suffers with a similar problem and again Nissan wriggle out of paying everytime.
  • This is what Nissan said in an e-mail to us
"I understand given your research you may disagree however we have access to information on a large ‘car parc’ of Almeras both in the UK and European Market. We are not conscious of widespread manufacturing defect effecting timing chains fitted to Almeras. I must also stress that I disagree with the opinions you have researched regarding the effect poor servicing can have on the longevity of a timing chain. If the oil is not changed then the NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) in the blow-by gas combine with water vapor and causes acid to form. This acid in the oil attacks the chain leading to elongation and or failure. It is for that reason we recommend the vehicle is serviced according to our schedule."
Have contacted Wathdog already but had no response guess they are too busy with Renault.
All Nissan garages are quite open that they are doing a lot of these and in our research we have discovered it is quite widespread among Nissans whole range not just the Navarro which you mentioned but the Micra as well. Problem is we are fighting a huge company with limitless resources and ours are severely limited by dint of the fact we are shelling out money on our vehicles due to this problem. Had a quick chat with Trading Standards who seem interested in this and will be talking to them Monday will let you know how we get on. However not expecting anything.

  • My partner has an 04 Almera and recently had the engine light come on. Called out the AA after a while when the car stalled and would not re start and they diagnosed the problem as the cam sensor. Cleaned the sensor and removed the fault from the ECU history and all was good for a while although my partner was complaining of a lack of power.

A week or so later the light came on again and this time we took it into a Nissan dealer who told us that the fault signalled that the timing chain had stretched and needed to be replaced at a cost of £900-£1300 depending on using patern parts or Nissan parts.

Got a second opinion from a local garage after the light came on for a 3rd time who also diagnosed the problem as a stretched timing chain and quoted £900.

Last week the car was running really badly, stuttering and a complete loss of power to a point where my partner lost all confidence in driving it.

I took it into a small garage, not a chain but a one man band. I described the problem to them and they suggested that it couldn't be the timing chain after 43000 miles and regular service and suggested that it might be a coil pack and asked if they could drive it. Both Nissan and the other garage hadn't offered to drive the car as aprt of their diagnostics.

The result....after driving the car, the mechanic said that it wasn't the timing chain and costed to replace the cam sensor which kept on appearing on the diagnostics unit. £46 later and a new cam sensor, the car drives perfectly and my partner has full confidence again.

    Always shop around.

    What's their email address? Thanks.

The contact number for customer service:

    Nissan customer services
    01923 899999

THE MORE PEOPLE THAT PHONE CUSTOMER SERVICES TO COMPLAIN ABOUT TIMING CHAIN THE MORE CHANCE THERE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE AS FAR AS CUSTOMER SERVICES ARE AWARE THERES NO PROBLEM WITH TIMING CHAIN SO THEY WON'T ISSUE A RECALL

    Hi,

The Timing Chain on my Nissan Almera has stretched for the 2nd time and Nissan has quoted me £1500-£1700.
When I spoke to Nissan customer services they said that I was the first person to report it! I think they say the same thing to everyone who attempts to report this common problem.

If the same problem happens to you, ask for a case number and share it with world. Give watch dog a call.
Nissan makes poor timing chains and, so far, is refusing to issue a recall.

I'll never buy a Nissan again.

Well to be fair, if you have to scrap the car because of the timing chain, it has lasted the lifetime of the car :)

Seriously, the timing chain failure shouldn't as far as I am aware damage the rest of the engine

How do you come to that conclusion? It does the same job as a cambelt. If it fails, the damage to an engine is going to be the same unless its a non-interference type.
