TV licence advice pls

Hi. My dd is a student in halls. She's paying a whopping £26 approx as tv licence monthly- the website says this is correct that your 1st licence is paid over 6 month to cover 12 months () .

Of course " no one else" has a licence lol I have reassured her that yes she does need it but I understand she can claim the last 3 months ( June jy aug) back but when do she need to lodge the claim ?

Thanks.

Yes the last 3 months can be claimed back. I think this should be done in June.

There's a link but MSE won't let me post as i'm a new user.

Does she actually have a TV?
I don't know anyone out of 100+ students in my halls that has an actual television set.

I know a few that watch live iPlayer, but probably <10%.

It doesn't matter what you watch TV on, it's whether or not the TV progs are received live. If live, then a licence *is* needed

Op - there needs to be a full 3 months left on the licence for your daughter to be able to claim a rebate.

I may be wrong but if you pay quarterly (you get whacked for a 1.25 per quarter fee) you effectively "pay as you go" for the licence rather than paying part in advance

Students are covered by their parents TV licence if they are watching live television on a portable device as long as it isn't 'installed'. The definition of 'installed' isn't clear in the legislation, but TV Licensing have taken it to mean any device which is plugged in. So you have the bizarre circumstance where you don't need a TV licence when watching live TV on a laptop that is running from its battery, but do need one if you decide to plug it in.

"As long as the address where you live is licensed, you’re also covered to watch TV outside your home using any device powered solely by its own internal batteries. This includes your mobile phone, laptop and tablet."

Yes - the point I was making is that in my experience it is rare that students watch live TV.

The few people I know that do, would probably wait the hour out if knew they could save £100+ a year.

  • I know all the " it's a grey area" ( no its not - you watch live tv on a plugged in laptop you need a licence! - not helped by uni providing a designated rom of telly live via the network!). Legally studentsdo need a licence. I shall make sure she cancels/ claims wll before June.

    Yhanks

Legally students do need a licence.

If they own and use a TV set or watch iPlayer live.

If you do not watch live TV on your own television set or laptop using iPlayer, you do not need a license.
    It's black and white.

With regards the University room - you don't need to pay a licence fee for that, they need to pay for a public broadcasting licence. We have a huge flatscreen in our common room, and they paid to the tune of £4000 for Sky last year.

No need for the adversarial attitude - only trying to save you a bit of money here. £10 per month to watch a few images you can legally get for free if you wait an hour is ridiculous IMO.
