studying in canada?

i'm coming to the end of my degree and thinking about the possibility of staying on to do a masters. Unfortunatley there's no way i could really afford 10k or whatever the cost is in the UK. However, i was speaking to a friend who suggested i should look abroad especially canada where its much cheaper.

has anyone knowledge of such a thing and how much it will cost? or any usefull websites?
i'm not really sure where to start.
What's it going to be, eh?

  • I went to University of Toronto on exchange in 2005 - absolutely loved it. Their website is https://www.utoronto.ca - don't know much about other Canadian unis, I know McGill and McMaster are supposed to be excellent too though. I wasn't a masters student, but if I can answer any other questions about being a student in Canada just yell :)

  • As a Brit I had a high rarity value at U of T (and in Toronto generally, for some reason)- there again Slavonics isn't the biggest department, so perhaps that's not particularly indicative of the rest of the uni! The International Exchange Office were amazing, they threw parties for international students, there were some others who lived in my building, but to be honest the really good friends I met were Canadian. Flaunt your accent in a bar and you may find you don't have to pay for as many drinks - upside to being in what may feel like the coldest place on Earth at times! Also - buy really good thermals (have lived in Russia too, the best ones I've test driven are M&S hands down) and good winter boots (I went with Timberlands, lovely and toasty). Hope this ramble helps!

There might be in with a good chance you can get funding or an employer to pay for you a PT Masters.

Are you wanting to follow the academic career because then I can see why you might want to do full time to get on with it, but PT could well be a way to go if not.

  • there a slavonics department
i've heard the brit accent goes down well, i would certainly be testing that theory out.

cheers studentphil, i've just started applying for grad jobs and im aware many offer personal study funds and what not. to be honest i'm just not looking forward to going back to the real world. another year of living it up sounds more appealing, especially if its in canada. just depends if i can afford it.
