Hi, I rent a house to full time university students, I recently got a EPC that said the loft insulation was not thick enough. I have emailed about 3 insulation companies, only one has replied and said as the students are not on benefits they do not qualify for a free installation. As we receive child benefit we are but it seems to go on the tenants situation. I really would have thought that they would have been entitled to the full grant (students never have any money). Could anyone advise me if I have been given the correct information ?
Thanks in advance

check the energy saving trust website - there are sometimes grants or other assistance specifically for landlords.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Errr... so you're running a business letting out a property and expect me to subsidise improvements to your business?
But to answer your Q - if you do not live in the property, then your own income/benefits/etc status is irrelevant.
The tenants' cicumstances might qualify - criteria change all the time so you'll need to research whether students do or not.0 -
Of course G M I'm going to get whatever I can get that is free and if it is thank you very much for your contribution. I have tried to research but nothing coming up.
Thanks Owain I'll check them out.0 -
Loft insulation is really inexpensive these days, there are lots of offers around.
Surely you can afford the £100 it might cost?
Why should other homeowners subsidise you?0 -

If that is all it is that is fine but as of now I have no idea. I have the EPC anyway and it makes no difference to me whatsoever. The certificate is available for them and their parents to see but no one has EVER asked to see it and I doubt anyone ever will.
Why shouldn't I take up a free offer (if any exists) I dont' understand the hostility. If it is there and free why not take it, I'm certain it is not illegal.0 -
Go for it! I took a HB lodger once (he was 16 and homeless so was taking him in anyway) but I suddenly realised that I could get free loft insulation and cavity insulation because someone in the property was on benefits. Bonus!0

Have a look at LESA - LLs Energy Saving Allowance - tax deductible insulation etc
There are some deals available via the various utility providers
You have had a couple of "snippy" replies but the fact is OP that yes, it helps your Ts but it also benefits you as the property owner. (You may like to know that G_M has declared himself to also be a LL )0 -

As for saying it makes no difference to you, there are plans for [edit: implementation of] the "recommendations" contained with an EPC to be insisted upon.0 -
EDF are currently offering free loft insulation for certain houses if your insulation isn't already over 60mm thick

£100?
B&Q have rolls (4.8 x 1.1 metres) for £3. See here. Depending on the size of your property/attic you'll need 3? 5? 7? rolls? That's £21!
Buy a mask (here) for £2.98 and spend half a day laying the insulation.
Job done!0
