Bought the wrong advance train ticket

I need some advice, I bought the wrong advance train ticket by mistake on redspottedhanky.com using a credit card. These tickets are normally non-refundable.

The ticket I bought was a single, I should have got a return. Is there anyway to change the ticket without incurring penalty charges?

Thanks in advance.

  • You could try phoning them and ask, if it's a mistake that just happened they might change it for you, there's a freephone number for Redspottedhanky somewhere on the forum.

Failing that, why not just buy another Advance single for the way back.

There is no such thing as an advance return ticket - you buy an advance single in each direction.

So just keep and use the ticket you have bought - you don't need to change it - and buy another one for the trip back.
  • The ticket I bought was East Croydon to skegness for Feb 10th @ £22. A advance single Skegness to East Croydon for the return journey £67.30. Where as a return ticket is £68 (for the same trains). So you can see it is much cheaper to get the return ticket. I'll try and call them tomorrow morning, but I'm a bit worried that they won't be willing to change the ticket.

Thank you for the advice. :)

If they don't honor the mistake, then you can try asking them to upgrade the advance single to a normal return for the difference in the fare + £10 admin charge.
  • £67.30 is a Super Off Peak Single and £68.30 is a Super Off Peak Return. Neither are Advance tickets, and they are refundable (minus a £10 admin fee per ticket). You can get the Super Off Peak Single excessed up to an Super Off Peak Return at any railway station before you start to travel for the difference.

Is there not an Advance Single on your return day?
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Chinezegirl, I fear your plea for them to change the ticket will fail, but of course, do ask.

What is the date of your return trip?

If they will not change the ticket and there are not any standard class advance singles, have a look for first class advance singles.
For example, returning on Fri 17 Feb there are first class Advance Singles for £52.00 which is over £15 cheaper than the standard class Super Off Peak Single.

They should be willing to do it for the £10 admin fee. If they won't a station should.

Possibly in two stages - upgrade to superoffpeak single for the difference in fare plus £10. Upgrade the superoffpeak single to a superoffpeak return for the difference in fare,
