I was talking about the fruit cake as I've never tried it with an iced cake but I imagine the icing and marzipan would deteriorate.
Like thriftlady, I saved the top tier of my wedding cake for the Christening (marzipan and icing removed), but it only lasted five years and then a greedy mouse got it because I didn't have the sense then to put it in a tin and had only wrapped it in greaseproof paper and tinfoil. The cake looked fine though.
Pink
Ps. When we finally caught it, it was the biggest mouse I'd ever seen.0 -
The booze keeps the cake preserved and a good Fruit cake will keep for 12 months easilyBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I'm afraid the top tier of our cake got weevils. Obviously didn't wrap it well enough. Hangs head in shame ...0

My Mum always, after baking fruit cake (without marzipzn & icing) cuts it into smaller portions & freezes it & gets it out as/when required.....it always tastes fine0

Frogletina - if you want to store a fruit cake you need to remove the marzipan and icing as these will, over time, go brown/yellow from the moisture in the cake.
My friends kept their top wedding cake tier wrapped and in an airtight tin, and served it up at baby's christening 10 (yes ten!) years later. It was still edible and no-one got food poisoning...0 -
My Great Aunt Elsie had a pantry full of tins with Christmas Cake in them.
We were not allowed to eat any till they were at least 5 years old .
She was famous for miles around for her cakes !

It's highly unlikely that a fruit cake would cause food poisoning given the quantities of sugar and dried fruit in it. Bacteria need moisture to grow and there normally isn't enough in a fruit cake Any alcohol in it has preserving qualities0
