Christmas cake last-ability

Options
Made Delia's christmas cake late october last year, brought it with us to Norway for christmas, but thanks to BA, we didn't see it again until the 26th of Jan:mad: . It was (and still is) regularly fed with brandy:D . How long would a cake like this keep? Is it OK to keep feeding it and have it for christmas this year?

Some people keep their cakes for over a year, so I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I find that wrapping it in an old piece of cotton helps keep it

What kind of cotton? Would an old tea towel do? Do you wrap it in greaseproof paper first? The cake is nice and moist, and I wouldn't want it to stick to the fabric.

As long as it is in a sealed container it will be fine. Wrap it in brown paper then place in tupperware or similar. Dont wrap it in tin foil though - cant remember why :D

I'd love a bit of Christmas cake now!

At the moment it's wrapped in about three layers of greaseproof paper, and it's sat in a big quality street tin, because BA broke the big plastic container that it was in when in transit. It's well travelled though! My cake went from Plymouth bright and early on the 20th of Dec 06 to Heathrow, then they lost it and it went to Paris, Milan, back to Paris, to Oslo, then further north to a little village called Vågå, then back to Oslo, Paris and back to Milan where it was sat for about a week, then out to Paris again, then to Birmingham, to Bristol and finally back to us in Plymouth on the 26th of Jan 07... Phew! It's a wonder the thing's not flat with exhaustion! Mind, with all the brandy I'd been feeding it, it should have had a lot of fun!

I thought the tin foil thing was just so that you would't get little bits of tin foil stuck on the cake, ending up giving your fillings a nasty surprise...

Some magazines & newspapers would pay good money for this sort of story on their letters page...I say make the cake earn it's keep!:D:D

  • I made my wedding cake& kept the top - the cake lasted longer than the marriage - so I ate it :D

I was going to add a post on here to ask about this too.

I pulled out the top tear of my wedding cake the other day.

It will be 20 years old in September :D

I have kept it wrapped and take a look every couple of years and drizzle a cap full of Brandy or whisky over it...don't know why :rotfl: but it still looks ok and smells ok although it feels a bit dry.

I kept it for a christianing but my views changed on religion by the time I had kids and haven't bothered.

Just don't know what to do with it now and don't throw it out for sentimental reasons....btw the marriage is still going too, similar treatment to the cake aswell :D
Not in debt at the moment, but been there in the past and realise I'm the kind of person who could easily fall back into it with the self destructing spending button so making sure I keep on top of being a good girl.
