I Need Help With My Satellite Dish...Tuner Overload

Hi,

We purchased a Ross Satellite Kit (free to air) from B & Q, my other half put it up however, in the strong wind and rain it loosend the connection.
Each time, my other half had to keep going up and tightening the lead to the dish.
After several times, it happened again, so he cut the aerial, stripped it back, reconnected and tighteneded the connection. Doing this meant he moved the dish and lost all signal.
We connected the sat finder meter to the reciever and lnb but it didnt work.
I tried to figure out why it wouldnt work so I went to the menu on the box and tried to tab across to turn the LNB power on, but it wouldnt tab. An error message keeps appearing saying 'TUNER OVERLOAD!'

Has anyone got any idea what to do?

Thank you

Gemma

While re-connecting the co-ax to the LNB, the receiver should have been switch off. If this was not done then a single strand of the co-ax braid may have shorted to the centre core when the cable was stripped back and damaged the power supply that feeds the LNB via the cable.

If you are lucky when any short is removed, it may work again. The cable to LNB should have be wrapped with self amalgamating tape to seal the joint from the elements, if this had been done re-termination would not have been needed.

Have you tried disconnecting the co-ax at the receiver end and then navigating the menus? Does the error message go when the cable is disconnected? A short circuit on the cable could prevent it working.

  • A rubber boot should of been used to protect the F connector and cable with liberal use of silicon grease to make it water tight. Self-amalgamating tape isn't really suitable because it won't really seal it against damp, humidity or heavy rain splashbacks. Very lightly tightening with a 11mm spanner and/or long nose pliers if you cannot get a small spanner in would prevent it coming loose but make sure you do not over tighten. It should really be tightened as much as possible using the fingers because that should be sufficient, so as not to risk damaging the LNB.

Make sure that you put the rubber boot over the cable before attaching the F connector or you will have to repeat it.

If it is a small dish, Sky minidish type of size, the signal loss might be par for the course due to location, imperfect alignment, long cables or multiple connections. It isn't a Sky minidish but those frequently have difficulty in bad weather due to the low signal levels. Everything needs to be next to perfect to get them working well.

I wouldn't recommend buying any satellite or aerial kits from large DIY stores. They don't include good quality components and the brackets aren't very strong.

If it's one of those analogue meters, they are next to useless for digital satellite tuning.

  • thanks everyone for all your help.
    Especially expresso.
Did what you said, took the cable out the back of the reciever, after a few attempts the lnb came on and then the sat finder meter worked.
we have more channels now then we did before! haha.
