You can always keep your Barclays account open and transfer your spending money over there each month to be able to use their debit card.

Santanders basic bank account doesn't come with a visa debit card, its just a cash card.QUOTE]

You planted a seed in my head and this has prompted me to check on their website about the type of card that i'd be getting.

It appears that it'll be a cash card and not a visa debit card like i was told by the bank staff..hm

Ah well,at least i still have an account which is what i was looking for in the first place.

This might actually save me from overspending online like i used to! ..

Im still a happy chappy.... :)

Give it 6 months you might not be such a happy chap when you get a load of their customer service :D

The Santander visa debit card, both the full one and the electronic one will allow you to go overdrawn if its less than £10 so it doesn't come on the basic account.

Are you sure it was the Basic account they opened for you, there is another account thats not on the website, its called Instant Plus acc, its sort of 1/2 way between a basic acc and a full one, that one has a debit card.

Once you have your basic account for 6 months, they will upgrade it without a further credit check to a normal account. I don't know how your BR affects this procedure though.

Are you sure they didn't open an instant plus account for you, that one is an unadvertised account between a basic and a full one, it comes with a debit card.

If your account is called Basic Current account, it doesn't have a card, if its called instant plus account it does.

They have got a bit better in recent months, and the call centres are all uk based now which is helpful. As long as your not expecting anything to complicated from them then it should be ok.

They were absolutely rubbish when someone stole money from my account in 2010, and blamed me. Had to go to the ombudsman to get me my money back, took nearly a year !

They also sent my bank statement to someone else in 2011 and didn't tell me for 6 months.

And they paid the wrong interest on my isa and argued that it was the tax that had been deducted (anyone spot the mistake).

Contgrats, seems they've given you the account with the debit card. There is no point in upgrading the account after 6 months the full account won't give you anything you don't already have, the 5% interest for 12 months is only for brand new customers now. And any overdraft will require a credit check.
  • Ive just opened an instant plus bank account with Santander too - Ive been discharged from bankruptcy for a little over a year now. They kind of glossed over this part - but there is a £10 a month charge for having this account (well, there is for me anyway!). Just wanted to ensure you were aware :) And yes, it comes with a VISA debit card that is normal in every way.

Hi yesican, I am pleased and it sounds promising but the key will be in receiving your card. Please let us know when you receive it.

    If...x

    UPDATE:

Just to let you know that i received my Santander visa DEBIT card yesterday and ive wasted no time in testing it to make sure that its working!lol
Have used an ATM to withdraw some cash, purchased items in shops with it and to be honest, as an undischarged BR to be able to use a bank card like this when other banks have shown me the door is really amazing...:T

For those who are having problems with opening an account with a debit card,Santander opened an Instant plus account for me.
Give it a go and you never know...:)

    All the best...
