Hi Twinklybev, it is very hard, especially when you see other people having a nice time and spending loads of money.

The only thing to remember is that when their chickens come home to roost, you'll still be alright, and they won't.

The only way to avoid scrimping and saving is to get more money coming in. A lot of people don't give any thought to their career, serious thought, as in How can I make more money in a few years time? Sit down with your other half and have a talk and give consideration as to how you could both improve your financial lot. All too often people have fallen into jobs which don't pay great wages, and they don't plan how to move upwards or elsewhere in order to get some dough. I'm sure you both have talents which are perhaps not receiving their full financial reward.

Totally agree. Well done on being debt free!

    Debt-free and Proud!
Aw TwinklyBev, it is so hard when you are skint all the time, I remember that so well.

I don;t know your situation but have you posted an SOA? Can you earn more money some how?

If not, then plan some free or nearly free treats - make a list and every so often pick something off it.

YOu could include a walk and picnic somewhere local (park, river), a pamper night of doing nails and facials, a couply night with a DVD borrowed from a mate, I'm sure there was a thread on this type of thing a while ago.

Try and keep focussed - those peeps going on hols are mostly getting into debt doing it - and who wants that??

    (((hugs)))

I spent alot of money a while back, but the good feeling that brought at the time doesnt balance out the constant worry about money that I have now, it ends up affecting other areas of your life and it isnt nice.

Saving money right, left and centre
  • I wouldnt advise credit cards, but know where your coming from. I second the idea of having a tent - we did this loads when I was a student. Loads of cheap nights and weekends away. I also think you can save on an iron by doing what I do - dont iron! Most people are too polite to comment! I find hanging them to dry usually pulls most of the crease out and dont let them get over dry.
  • you have done well to be debt free! and as everyone has been saying its a hard job to stay that way, but if it feels hard scrimping and saving now just think how hard it would be trying to do that and pay off debt!

Ill say the same as the rest join pigsback, I joined around christmas and next week I will have my second £10 voucher on its way to me, Im planning to use mine for stuff I normally buy and then give myself the equivalent in cash (so I can spend it where I want) but you can get vouchers for lots of different things (restaurants, cinema vouchers etc) I also want to add that I have never spent a penny on anything to earn these vouchers so its all free money.

Also quidco is good for cashback (my brother should get £100 back in a couple of months for taking out a policy with prudential which was the lowest quote he had had for a renewal)

There are many ways of making a little extra. I am currently taking part in the 2007 olympic challenge on another thread, feel free to come and have a look (first page shows lots of ways to make money)

sorry for such a long post, but I got a credit card 5 years ago (for emergencies and the odd treat) and then a car loan and finally a loan to consolidate credit cards, overdraft and store credit for a laptop (and also I wanted a holiday to australia) and eventually paid it off early last year (if I hadnt I would have still had 13 months left of paying out £121.45 a month to my bank!)
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!
  • sorry :o got a bit caught up there, I did mean to say in my experience cheap irons are far better.

mine was a cheap one from woolies that is still going 5 years down the line. my little bro has it now as he moved out 2 years ago and I moved back home. now use my mums expensive one which I hate, its nowhere near as good!
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!

I havent posted in this part of the forum before, however I have 6 cards and the only advice is, dont get a credit card, if you havent got one dont get one...

one turns to two, the first one gets increased, the third one and before you know it that little £100 spend to treat yourself grows to £6k before you know it
  • Ill second that tlk9!

have now decided to be strict with myself, I can only have it if I have got the money to buy it! (now I have the money I dont want it :D)
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!
