Mum has died, ending DLA & Motability...

Hello!, Little unsure of whether it is worth asking for any advice, as I think I know the answer in advance...However.
My Mum passed away last week, was in reciept of DLA which included a car, which was on a 5 year `right to buy?` scheme. As far as I`m aware, she had been on the scheme for roughly 27 months, or made 27 monthly payments.
Today dad rang up dla to advise them about my mum, he was told to keep the car he would have to pay just over £5300 & has till the start of february to decide. We basically have `no money` to do this, so basically considering the fact that he is now just in reciept of single persons Pension credit & lives in `sheltered accomodation` (paid for by the local council), would he be able to approach anywhere to borrow money to keep the car, or just the let the car `go` & be able to gain a `loan` to buy another car from elsewhere?, given his now financial status.
Failing all of that, what basic help can he obtain to `get about`, as he always had the car, we know nothing about bus / train passes etc. It`s probably a silly question to ask in the first place, but we are totally in the dark, along with grieving for mum. Any help and advise would be appreciated, Thank you.

First of all sorry for your loss.
In relation to your father's situation and the car I would think he will have difficulty either obtaining or paying a loan, in the cirumstances you have described.
Sounds like (age wise) he may qualify for free bus/rail pass. Check with main stations/or online for info on both.0 -
Thank you to both of you for your help. Tbh I was expecting the same thing, I know it was a huge benefit for mum and we are still eternally thankful for the car. It`s just another reminder that mum has gone, and didn`t help that she choose the colour & car etc. It is ironic that yesterday dad was `happy` that he had recieved a letter stating he would recieve a full `bereavement payment` of £2000, which is going to be used to `bury` mum, & then the Dwp funeral payment afterwards will complete the bill (more or less). To today to find out he has no hope in keeping it etc. Of course I know losing the car, is nothing to losing mum, but I think dad was hoping he could come to an arrangement to pay off the car with motability, or direct thru the dealership. He had it all worked out, that it would be £50 or so a week. I suspected he wouldn`t be able to, but just thought i`d ask on here just in case I was wrong. Thank you both again.0

Its not option to buy its generally :
- leasehire or hire purchase
- new vehicle every 36 months or 60 months
- its based on your mum's HRMC of DLA
- and the contract was with you mum not your dad
- so no relationship exists between the legal leasing contract and your family
However your mum was two thirds into the renewal period, and the car and [assumption] Blue Badge are going to have to be surrendered, as the payments from DWP to Motability will cease anyway. Why not get in touch with Motability and ask them the questions you ask here. Given that the used car is now two years old there may be some 'arrangement' they can come to on a cash purchase. It costs nothing to ask.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. agree with all above but as OP said payments are 27 months into a 5 year payment and dad has no money to cover further payments, not sure what car it is but quite sure theres still thousands left to pay and best option would be to give up the car, sorry for your loss.0 -

I am assuoing that this was the 'arrangement' that is not affordable. sa s I am awae motabilitdo not offeany exnsions o creditfacilities so neotiaion regarding paymet periods will not b an option.0 -

Wouldn't it be cheaper for your dad to save to get a cheap runaround rather than struggle to keep the shiny newish one.
He won't just be on a single persons pension as the OP is worried about - he will get pension credit and he should (as it's said he has little in the way of savings) get council tax and rent rebate as well.:hello:0 -
Many thanks again to all of you.
Well, it seems dad is able to get another car with fairly low payments (£95 pmth) & with no deposit. We all know that the price he will eventually pay will be too much for what the car will be worth, but it seems a way out. It seems they have done a `credit check` on him, it is fine & he got told he can go tomorrow to choose one, so fingers crossed.
On reflection, I suppose the right thing has happened, as the car would be a constant reminder of mum etc. I`m trying so hard to be practical, despite being totally broken. Once again, Many thanks to you all.0
