I agree with macman. It's quite easy to compare tariffs. The fact that some have a higher standing charge and some a higher unit cost means the cheapest service depends on your usage. If the same supplier was cheapest for everyone, who would go with anyone else? There would be no market. The current system is better for money saving-savvy people, and I'd question the likes of Martin Lewis claiming the structure should be simplified - is he a money saving expert or a general-purpose consumer watchdog?
It isn't true to say mobile phones and broadband are simpler. Which mobile provider you choose depends on your usage. Do you mainly make calls or texts? Do you use mobile internet, and if so how heavily? Which networks give a signal in your area? And for broadband, you have to consider usage limits, traffic management, etc. which often are rather opaque and hidden in small print. Simply picking the cheapest broadband is a bad idea if you are a serious user.
Compared to these, choosing a utility provider is simple. The cheapest for you is the cheapest, and product you get your your money will be exactly the same.0
